The conference will promote open debates and explore policy implications of longevity in Europe. Announced in the Demography toolbox of October 2023, it will gather high-level speakers from the Commission and national decision makers, as well as EU social partners and stakeholders, international organisations and academia.

Confirmed speakers include Commissioners Šuica, Schmit and Gentiloni, Deputy PM of Belgium Franck Vandenbroucke and Nobel Prize laureate in economics Prof. Peter Diamond.

Building on the findings of the 2024 Ageing Report and the 2024 Pension Adequacy Report, experts and stakeholders will come together to reflect on key challenges for longevity in Europe:

  • how to balance sustainability and adequacy in Europe’s pension systems
  • what strategies for sustainable and adequate long-term care and healthcare
  • how participation, learning and equity can help shape transforming labour markets in a longevity society

Participation is upon invitation only.

Background

The Pension Adequacy Report of the Social Protection Committee and the Commission and the Ageing Report of the Economic Policy Committee and the Commission are flagship triennial reports that provide comparative forward-looking analysis respectively of the adequacy of old-age income and of the macroeconomic and fiscal sustainability challenges linked to population ageing.

Findings of the 2024 editions of both reports will be presented and discussed at the high-level conference.
