Romanian and French National Rural Networks cooperation

One conclusion of the last ENRD Workshop for NRNs on 'Working together: linking Rural Networks' (04/05/2021) was that cooperation between National Rural Networks (NRNs) is an added value, and can foster innovation.

A noteworthy example is the collaboration between the French and Romanian NRNs. Together, they build different initiatives, including webinars on topics of common interest, such as Simplified Cost Options (SCO) within LEADER, Natural Resources Management, and how CAP Strategic Plan can respond to local needs.

The partnership continues an initiative of the French Embassy in Romania. Stay tuned to find out more.

Report of 19th NRN meeting

The report of the 19th National Rural Networks meeting (held online on 11 February 2021) is available. The event page also includes the presentations and videos played at the event.

The meeting focussed on discussing the role of NRNs in supporting and promoting the transnational cooperation (TNC) action of Local Action Groups (LAGs) and the cross-border cooperation of EIP-AGRI Operational Groups (OGs). The event also provided space for exchange on forthcoming rural networking activities and the ongoing development of national CAP networks.

New edition of Rural Connections

Rural Connections 1/2021 is now available and brings you a variety of news and views from rural Europe.

This issue of the magazine recaps the ENRD's work to support rural stakeholders in the transition to the new CAP, then focuses on how to communicate successfully about rural development projects, based on the NRN's work and the Rural Inspiration Awards. Articles by rural development stakeholders across Europe range from social farming to LEADER enhancing a Greek island’s intangible cultural heritage, to the state of the digital transition in rural areas.

The magazine will soon be available also in French, German, Italian, Spanish and Polish.

LEADER funding made simpler

The 7th LEADER Thematic Lab on 'LEADER funding made simpler' explored how LEADER funding and implementation can be made simpler by the application of simplified cost options during the transition period and under the CAP Strategic Plans.

Participants had the opportunity to learn about the updated Commission guidance on the application of simplified cost options and exchange about various Member State approaches and plans based on their practical experiences.

LEADER project Saldus Municipality Dižprojekts 2020

LEADER project competition in Latvia

The Latvian Rural Forum organised the 10th edition of its competition 'Dižprojekts' ('The grand project'), rewarding successful LEADER projects.

The winners were selected among 29 candidate projects identified by Latvian Local Action Groups. LAGs, an expert jury and the general public nominated the winner.

The winner of 'Dižprojekts 2020' was the project the project 'Digitals tools for innovative services in Jaunauce Manor' implemented by the association Mēs-Jaunaucei in the Saldus Municipality. This project used augmented reality to make available to the public a unique art collection owned by a local noble family and disappeared during World War II.
The second place was awarded to the project 'The development of historic tourism in Pasiekste windmill' and the third place went to the project 'Production site development of homemade cheese'.

Happy birthday LEADER!

30 years ago, the EU adopted a new approach for community-led rural development: the LEADER method, focused on the participation of the local population and public-private partnerships for integrated local development.

To mark the occasion the Commission has made available a banner which Managing Authorities, NRNS, LAGS and other stakeholders are invited to use on LEADER related products during 2021 - more details and downloadable version here.

The ENRD website hosts a wealth of LEADER Resources, including guidance, projects examples, videos and news from the field. A special edition of the EU Rural Review looked at 'LEADER Achievements' and is now available in eight languages.

The document gathers background information, considers the policy framework, lists information sources and funding opportunities and concludes with policy and stakeholder views.

The briefing highlights, among others, the connections between Smart Villages and LEADER, based on the work of the ENRD.

LEADER for resilience and sustainability: report available

The highlights report of the ENRD LEADER Thematic Lab on 'Designing LEADER for resilience and sustainability' (14 January 2021) is now available.

In this online event, participants looked at the main social, economic and environmental aspects of resilience and LEADER’s role in optimising these. They also discussed key capacity and delivery systems features for resilience and how LEADER can build on them.

This was the 6th of a series of LEADER Thematic Labs. Previous reports are available in the LEADER Resources section of this website.

LEADER in Albania: implementation and way forward

This policy document by the Albanian Rural Network provides an overview of the dynamics and progress of the introduction and implementation of the LEADER approach as an instrument of rural development in Albania.

The approach may further spread its wings, resulting in some new LAGs, as the LEADER measure will be introduced in the Albanian IPARD III programme for 2021-2027. The paper includes also a list of existing LAGs, ready for cooperation with LAGs from EU Member States.
