The European Commission is investing over €143 million in 96 projects under the Twinning 2023 action, of which 20 were funded under the Green Deal call and 76 under the Bottom-Up call. The action will enhance networking activities between research institutions of the Widening countries, acting as coordinators, and top-class leading counterparts at EU level.

A new collaborative European network on age-related diseases (14/10/2024)

The EU-funded PhasAGE project fights age-related diseases by researching protein dysfunction through a collaboration between: IBMC/i3S, the University of Padua, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and the Flemish Institute for Biotechnology. PhasAGE’s activity also includes training, raising awareness, and sharing knowledge, resulting in benefits both for citizens and the scientific community.

Great interest in funding opportunities under Horizon Europe Widening actions (15/05/2024)

397 project proposals were submitted under the Excellence Hubs, ERA Chairs and Teaming (2nd Stage) calls for proposals. The total budget requested reached over €1.9 billion. For all three calls evaluation results are to be communicated in September 2024, with Grant Agreement signature foreseen for November 2024.

Pathways to synergies: new projects bridging the gap between local and EU funding (15/05/2024)

The Pathways to synergies pilot call for proposals closed on 28 September 2023. It received 33 eligible proposals, of which 16 were selected for funding. Some projects already signed their Grant Agreements, with the rest of the signatures following in May 2024. The successful applicants aim to start their activity by the end of this year.

The European Research Area (ERA) Chair Dynamics in the Widening Programme report aims at capturing the geographical distribution of ERA Chair projects throughout the different Horizon 2020 (2014-2020) and Horizon Europe 2022 Calls, by analysing the flows of the ERA Chair holders from their origin to destination. The report focuses on topics, such as the trends of returning nationals in the ERA Chair holder flows, gender aspects, origin of holders from non-associated Third Countries and the overall picture of career mobility within the scheme of the ERA Chair Action.

Evaluations ongoing for Teaming for Excellence and European Excellence Initiatives 2023 (22/05/2023)

With EUR 174 million available, the Teaming for Excellence Call (stage 1) received 125 proposals and will support around 18 projects. Selected proposals will be contacted by the end of July 2023. The European Excellence initiative has a budget of EUR 54 million, received 61 proposals and will fund around 20 projects. Selected proposals will be contacted by mid July 2023.

Results of the European Research Area Talents call are out! (22/05/2023)

Nine ERA Talents projects are funded with a total of EUR 23.8 million. Grant agreements will be signed by May and projects will start their activities between June and September 2023. ERA Talents action aims to boost interoperability of careers and employability of research and innovation talents across sectors, with a centre of gravity in widening countries. It focuses on cross-sectoral talent circulation and academia-business collaboration for knowledge transfer across Europe.

European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Mariya Gabriel, prior to receiving the institutional mandate to form a government, visited InnoRenew in Slovenia. A flagship project of Widening funding, InnoRenew offers unique trainings to improve skills from bio-based materials to inclusive design and innovations. It promotes research and innovation deriving from traditional knowledge and skills related to wood and wood-compatible natural materials and seeks to increase added value and export of companies by 15% by 2023. ANTARES Centre of Excellence for Advanced Technologies in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security (22/05/2023)

The Teaming for Excellence ANTARES project boosts research excellence at the BioSense Institute in Serbia. Its aim is to stimulate entrepreneurship and employment at regional level and secure enough safe food for the growing global population. Research and technological development is performed at global standards in term of scientific excellence, technological innovation and the contribution to broader social goals. The BioSense Institute also received grants for DRAGON, an agricultural big data project helping to fine tune key technological skills and NANOFACTS, a project that helped promote cancer research with leading European institutions. The BioSense Institute was visited by European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Mariya Gabriel, prior to receiving the institutional mandate to form a government.

New face masks with sensors! Pioneering stretchable and textile electronics in Serbia & Europe (26/01/2023)

The STRENTEX project has designed a new face mask with sensors that assess lung capacity and body temperature, key variables in the detection of preliminary Covid-19 symptoms. Building on a network of international partners as well as SMEs, the project also plans to contribute to the development of a range of stretchable and textile electronics from baby slings to blankets. The wider aim of the project is to narrow the innovation divide between Serbia and Europe by creating a point of excellence at the Faculty of Technical Sciences, University of Novi Sad (FTN), Vojvodina, Serbia, in conjunction with the goals of the Horizon Europe Widening programme.

Greece, Malta & France strengthen innovation ecosystems in the Mediterranean food value chain (26/01/2023)

The project focuses on the production of nutritious food products and the optimization of food industrial side-streams. It is a cross-border collaboration between Greece, Malta and France on a common strategy on strengthening the Mediterranean food added-value chains. The project is one of the 10 new Excellence Hubs addressing Europe’s innovation divide via the Horizon Europe Widening programme. These hubs bring together academia, business, regional governments and societal actors.

Slovenia sets course for fire-safe sustainable buildings (26/01/2023)

The FRISSBE project implements new practices in fire resilient construction materials and technologies at the Slovenian National Building and Civil Engineering Institute, ZAG. This is done by attracting and maintaining high quality human resources under the direction of the ERA Chair holder. The project will lead to lasting, sustainable structural changes, have regional impacts in terms of research, education, and engineering at ZAG and spread excellence in innovation throughout the EU region.
