ASTRAL project Winter School
|
The ASTRAL project held its Winter School on ‘Technologies and Circularity for Sustainable Aquaculture’ in November 2023 at the DFactory in Barcelona. The Winter School addressed issues to enhance the aquaculture industry’s environmental impact by investigating cutting-edge technologies and circular economy strategies.

SAVE THE DATE: European Maritime Day 2024: 30-31 May
|
The 2024 European Maritime Day will be held in Svendborg, Denmark, on 30 and 31 May. The European Commission, the city of Svendborg and the Danish Maritime Authority are the organisers of the event that will include high-level panels, workshops, creative pitching sessions and an exhibition area.

The EU Fish Market 2023 edition: a snapshot
|
The EUMOFA report ‘The EU Fish Market 2023: a snapshot’ was released at the end of November 2023. Since 2014, the study provides a thorough economic analysis of the EU’s fisheries and aquaculture sector, including every aspect of the production, trade and consumption of these products both domestically and internationally, broken down by species or Member State.

Call for tender: Scaling-up EU cultivation of shellfish and algae
|
In the EU, biomass accounts for over 60% of all renewable energy. According to different scenarios, more will be required to achieve the EU’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2050, which puts pressure on land resources for other priorities, such as safeguarding wilderness areas and cultivating food and feed.

Positioning itself in an effort to bring awareness and education to the next generation about the aquaculture industry, the Aquaponics kit for schools was produced as part of the EU-funded NewTechAqua project.

AQUAculture infrastructures for EXCELlence in EUropean fish research 3.0
|
AQUAEXCEL3.0 is a five-year project funded by Horizon 2020 that intends to strengthen the EU aquaculture sector by expanding the Transnational Access programme and by encouraging additional external research groups that collaborate with its top-notch facilities.

In focus: Country Information
|
|

The AAM website contains a clickable map to access aquaculture-related information about each EU Member State. The dedicated page includes an overview of the aquaculture sector for each country: relevant authorities, applicable legislation, national associations and networks, and the national strategic plan on aquaculture in the original language with the summary in English. If you are a user with the Country Editor role, you have editing access and permission for the ‘Country Information’ page. To get to know more and start editing the information, read the relevant documentation on the AAM website.

FINLAND
|
In 2021, the volume of Finnish aquaculture production was 14.400 tonnes, for a value of €73,3 million. Moreover, a total of 237 aquaculture companies were active, according to the latest data (Multi Annual National Strategic Plan Finland, 2021).
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
FRANCE
|
According to recent statistics (Eurostat, 2023), France is the second biggest producer of aquaculture in the EU, with a share of 17.2%. According to data released by EUMOFA (2022), in 2019, 80% of the French production occurred in marine waters, while the remining 20% in freshwater.

|
On 17 October, Horizon Europe launched a new call based on recent advancements in regional nitrogen and phosphorus balancing and quantification approaches to guarantee the health of air, water and soil ecosystems.

Additional activities for the European Partnership for a Climate-neutral, Sustainable and Productive Blue Economy
|
The aim of this action is to maintain support for the European Partnership for a Climate-Neutral, Sustainable, and Productive Blue Economy (SBEP), in line with the intended scope and duration, as well as in compliance with Article 24(2) of the Horizon Europe Regulation, as stated in the Horizon Europe Strategic Plan 2021-2024.

The EU Aquaculture Assistance Mechanism issues this newsletter every 2 months. The Aquaculture Assistance Mechanism supports the implementation of the Strategic Guidelines for a more sustainable and competitive EU aquaculture for period 2021-2030. It is managed by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) on behalf of Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.
